The Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Paris

Paris, renowned for its rich culinary heritage, has seen a surge in vegetarian and vegan options in recent years. As more people embrace plant-based diets, the city's dining scene has evolved to cater to diverse tastes. We will explore where to find the best vegetarian restaurants in Paris and highlight some must-try dishes.

When Mr. Misadventires and I first started dating he was a vegetarian and we were living in the San Francisco Bay area, not a bad place to be a vegetarian! When we moved to France and started visiting Paris frequently, he would bemoan the lack of vegetarian offerings. It was really hard to find a vegetarian restaurant, let alone dishes on a regular menu!

My hubby isn't vegetarian anymore but that doesn't prevent us from enjoying the very vibrant vegetarian food scene in Paris.

Tips for vegetarian dining in Paris

An important tip: in French, vegetarian is végétarien and vegan is végétalien.

When searching for vegetarian food in Paris, you don’t have to confine yourself to a restricted menu. Several restaurants and cafes are more welcoming to vegetarian food than you might think. It’s always a safe option to go to a completely vegetarian restaurant but you can also look up a restaurant’s menu and recent reviews online to check if they have vegetarian options.

Alternatively, don’t hesitate to ask the staff if they serve vegetarian food or can accommodate your requirements before sitting down.

Another good idea is to check the HappyCow website to find vegetarian places in Paris. Whether you’re looking for a juice bar, an ice cream place, a farmers market, a bakery, or a vegetarian health store, you can find various vegetarian-friendly places.

How will I know if a Parisian restaurant serves vegetarian food?

Before choosing a restaurant, check their online menu and recent reviews to see if they serve vegetarian food. Restaurants in France also have a menu outside that you can refer to before sitting.

Words like ‘végétal’ or ‘sans gluten’ are indications of plant-based dishes. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to ask the waiting staff if they have vegan dishes or if they can provide vegetarian alternatives.
