Mr. Misadventures and I are planning a bike trip through the Loire Valley in France next year! We have been doing a ton of research as we want to be prepared. Safety is my biggest concern and I want to share some tips I learned while planning this trip.

Plan Your Route Carefully

Before you hit the road, take the time to plan your route meticulously. Research the terrain, road conditions, and potential hazards along the way. Plan your stops, including rest areas, accommodations, and places to refuel.

Utilize cycling-specific maps and apps to find bike-friendly routes and avoid heavily congested or dangerous roads. Many cyclists who have to contact a bicycle accident lawyer do so because they were hit by a vehicle, so avoiding traffic-heavy roads is especially recommended when taking a long bike trip.

It’s also important to share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, so someone knows your whereabouts at all times. This step can be crucial in case of emergencies, ensuring that help can be sent your way if needed. I recommend putting an Apple AirTag on your backpack or bike.

Check and Maintain Your Bike

Your bike is your trusty companion on this journey, so it's essential to ensure that it's in optimal condition. Before starting your trip, conduct a thorough bike check. This should include inspecting tires for any signs of wear, testing the brakes, checking the gears and drivetrain, examining the frame, and ensuring that any bolts and fasteners are tight and secure. Any issues should be rectified before departure.

Regular maintenance throughout your journey is also vital. Carry essential tools, spare parts, and a repair kit, including a tire repair kit and a multi-tool. Knowing how to perform basic bike repairs can be invaluable when you're far from a bike shop.

Stay Hydrated and Fuel Up

Proper nutrition and hydration are crucial on long bike journeys. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, reduced concentration, and even heat-related illnesses. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.

If you're cycling in hot weather, consider a hydration pack to carry more water. I prefer Nuun Sport and LMNT hydration tablets and powders.

Pack energy-rich snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruits to keep your energy levels up throughout the ride. Plan your meals and rest stops to ensure you're eating balanced meals to sustain your energy.

Be Aware of Traffic and Road Rules

When you're on the road, it's essential to understand and follow traffic laws and road rules. Always ride in the same direction as traffic, signal your turns, and obey traffic signals and signs. Maintain a safe distance from vehicles, and use hand signals to indicate your intentions to drivers.

Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like listening to music with headphones while cycling, as it can impair your ability to hear approaching vehicles or warnings from fellow cyclists. Listening to music while cycling can be enjoyable, but it’s important to be safe — if necessary, look at buying a bike speaker for the trip.

Long bike journeys can be incredibly rewarding experiences, offering a sense of freedom and a connection with the world around you. However, ensuring your safety is paramount to fully enjoy the journey. Take our tips on board, and you’ll have a smooth trip from beginning to end.
