Who doesn't love curling up in front of a fire with a good book and a delicious homemade latte? I love coffee; I have a whole coffee story and have written about it plenty (check out the end of this post to see the collection) because coffee is important to me! My day starts with an espresso from my beloved Nespresso machine, then I move to drip coffee (Counter Culture beans) from my coffee maker, which I drink all morning.

How to Make a Cafe Latte at Home

Before we dive into all 42 flavors, let me show you the base on which every one of these drinks is built. Once you can make a classic cafe latte at home, the variations are easy. A cafe latte (also just called a latte) is simply espresso and steamed milk with a thin layer of foam on top, and the good news is you do not need a fancy machine to make a lovely one.

What you need

  • 1 to 2 shots of espresso, or about a third of a cup of strong brewed coffee
  • About three-quarters of a cup of milk, dairy, or your favorite plant milk
  • Optional: a spoon of flavored syrup, sugar, or vanilla

The ratio

A classic latte is roughly one part espresso to three parts steamed milk, finished with a thin cap of foam. That is what gives a latte its creamy, mellow taste, milkier and gentler than a cappuccino.

How to make it, step by step

  1. Brew your espresso, or a small amount of very strong coffee, and pour it into your favorite mug.
  2. If you are using syrup or sugar, stir it into the hot espresso now so it dissolves.
  3. Heat your milk until it is hot but not boiling, to around 150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  4. Froth the milk. Use a handheld frother, or pour the warm milk into a sealed jar and shake it hard for thirty seconds, or whisk it in a saucepan.
  5. Pour the steamed milk into the espresso, holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top.
  6. Add a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon if you like, and enjoy.

Andi’s tip: No espresso machine? No problem. Strongly brewed coffee or instant espresso, plus milk, shaken in a mason jar, makes a genuinely good latte, and it is how I make mine on lazy mornings. Now that you have the base down, scroll on for 42 ways to dress it up.

Caffe Latte Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cafe latte?

A cafe latte is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk, topped with a thin layer of foam. Latte and cafe latte are two names for the same drink.

What is the ratio of espresso to milk in a latte?

About one part espresso to three parts steamed milk, finished with a thin layer of foam. That high milk ratio is what makes a latte creamy and mild.

How do you make a cafe latte without a machine?

Brew strong coffee or instant espresso, heat your milk until hot but not boiling, then froth it by shaking it in a sealed jar or whisking it in a pan. Pour the milk over the coffee and top with the foam.

What is the difference between a latte and a cappuccino?

A latte has more steamed milk and just a thin layer of foam, so it tastes creamy and mild. A cappuccino uses equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and thick foam, so it tastes stronger and lighter.

Can you make a latte with plant milk?

Yes. Oat milk froths especially well, and soy, almond, and coconut milk all work beautifully. Many of the 42 recipes below use plant milk.

42 is a lot, but now that you have the base cafe latte recipe down, you can invent even more of your own. Happy brewing!
