Weekly Wanderings #20 – Douro River, Portugal
Last week I wrote from Lisbon where we spent a couple of days visiting the city prior to our Viking River Cruise. (More on this sponsored trip in upcoming posts.) Since Saturday we’ve been on the boat exploring the Douro River region of Portugal, wine, porto and all.
It’s been energizing to learn so much history of a country I am connected. I know so much about other parts of Western Europe, but I knew very little about Portuguese history. I love history, so I have been talking the tour guides’ ears off soaking up as much as possible. If you’ve never checked into Portuguese history, dive in! It’s fascinating!

The one thing we have been most frustrated with is the food, which is pretty normal for us. It is sardine season, so we are desperate for freshly grilled sardines and we are on a mission to have them before we leave. Wish us luck!
Our cruise ends on Sunday in Porto and we are planning to drive the smaller roads back to Lisbon in order to explore the countryside more. Then we’ll spend two additional days in Lisbon before heading back to Phoenix to reunite with our RV and Jessica.
After that, we’re headed to Oregon for 9 weeks, spending time in the central part of the state, the coast, as well as the upper eastern region before heading to Montana at the end of August.
We are really excited to explore Oregon and I am looking forward to fish and seafood!

I bet it all is so fascinating. I have watched a ton of food network tv shows and all of the Portuguese food.. I don’t think I would like sardines, lol!
@Starla, the food is delicious here, they have so much to work with, from the ocean, rivers mountains, etc. I haven’t tried anything I didn’t like!

I grew up in Oregon! It truly is a beautiful state, most of which is nature and untouched by man. I love it there! 🙂
@Lauryn, I have to agree. We are spending 9 weeks here because we think eventually this is where we want to call home.
