Traveler Tuesday – Kit of The Kittchen
My first day at BlogHouse in Indianapolis I had the pleasure of sitting next to Kit of The Kittchen. As the day progressed and I learned more and more about this travel and food blogger, founder and cookbook author, I couldn't help but be impressed. It seems like she is constantly on the go, but yet still has time to foster a thriving blogging resource community in Chicago where she currently lives.
Let’s meet travel blogger Kit!
[1] When and how did you become a traveler?
I always wanted to travel, but I became a traveler in college. I studied abroad in Florence during my sophomore year, and that was not enough. The following summer I backpacked through England, Ireland, and Scotland, and in my senior year, I spent a semester studying in Germany and Austria and backpacking for a month.
Then, like most people, I had to put traveling on pause while I started a career. When I met my husband (who is half British and half Spanish) I started to travel more and more. Fast forward a few years and I became a full-time blogger and I am finally able to live out my travel dreams! These days I do about 20 trips a year.
[2] What kind of traveler do you define yourself as?
I love to combine luxury travel with adventure travel. I love hiking, rock climbing, and actively exploring new destinations – but I want someplace nice to sleep – and perhaps breakfast in bed in the morning.
I believe in having a couple things on a schedule, but I love to be spontaneous. I ask locals for their recommendations and like to explore things that are less popular.
[3] What do you love most about traveling?
Meeting new people.
[4] What do you dislike about traveling?
I have a tendency to either get sick or foolishly hurt myself. I joke that I need to be sponsored by a cold medication brand. I was terribly sick in London last year, and I was sick again in Serbia this year. I hurt my knee climbing a glacier in Iceland. I nearly broke my toe getting into the shower in New Orleans. Something always happens, but it is part of the adventure.
[5] Why should people travel?
I think it is the best way to learn. You learn so much about other people, cultures, history, and cuisine through traveling. I think you also learn about yourself – especially when you travel solo.
[6] What famous person would you like to travel with?
Kate Middleton because she seems so lovely, and I am sure that her trips are always epic and we would have incredible access to all of the landmarks.
[7] What won’t you travel without?
My planner! I have a Rifle Paper Co. planner that I use to schedule my entire life. I write down hotel addresses, flight details, etc.
And obviously a camera.
[8] Travel essentials – 3 things you always travel with.
My laptop – I get tons of work done on the road, so I love to bring my laptop.
A camera – I have a Canon Rebel and a Canon 60D, I bring the rebel when I want to bring something a little smaller and lighter. I recommend a 24mm lens, a 50mm lens, and a 50-200mm zoom lens.
Sneakers – I walk miles and miles when I travel, so comfortable footwear is essential.
[9] If you’re a foodie, what's your favorite food city? Do you have a restaurant recommendation?
This is such a tough question! I am going to say Austin because I love tacos so much. Torchey's Tacos and Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ tacos are amazing. I live in Chicago and do believe it is one of the best food cities in the world – if you come here eat at Avec, Au Cheval, Roister, and Southport Grocery.
[10] What's one location on your bucket list?
Cuba!!!
[11] Do you have a piece of advice for bloggers starting out?
Just start writing. So many people get hung up on what to call their site, or what to write about. You can just start writing and figure it out as you go. Also – I run the Windy City Blogger Collective, so if you want to start a blog, here are some resources to help you get started.

How about you? What would you like to know about Kit?
Like it? PIN it!
I want to start following all of her adventures! Also this makes me want to plan a trip right away.
Thanks for introducing me to a new blogger I didn’t know! I’d really love to go to Cuba as well and am thinking about trying to get there this winter.
Was lovely reading about Kit. I’ve always been curious about travel bloggers! So much fun!
I would love to travel more with my kids. I am not into meeting new people, but I love exploring new places.
This sounds so fun. What an adventure being a travel blogger must be!
I wish I had more time to write about travelling. I would do it all the time if I could!
Loved this interview. What an interesting life she had lead and a full one for someone so young. AND she never once said she was tired or bored with traveling or blogging. That says a lot. Thanks, I really enjoyed this.
Great interview! Hey, I would LOVE to travel with HER! Seems like she knows all the tricks!
I love that you mentioned that people should travel because you learn so much. I think I have to agree with that statement. There’s one thing with learning about cultures and other places in books but to experience it first hand, you are truly able to “learn” it all.
This sounds fun. She sounds like a fun person to travel with!
She sounds awesome! This is a great interview! I definitely want to follow her travels! 🙂
What an interesting interview! I want to be like her and travel to places I dream of! However, since I am still currently tied down to the responsibility of sending kids through college, traveling will have to take a backseat. I will follow her adventures. It would probably be just as good as being there myself.
Interesting, thanks for sharing with us! 🙂
Very interesting profile- some people have envious lives- maybe one day for me?
