Friday Foodie – Abeer of Cake Whiz
Abeer of CakeWhiz is a very happy person. She is going to kill me but I edited out several extra smiley faces and “hee-hee's” as she is so exuberant in her writing she just oozes fun! She is infectious and who could not love someone whose goal is to make pretty things that taste good for her friends and family. I am just sad she lives in Chicago and I can't enjoy her happy, pretty, tasty treats!
Let’s meet Abeer!
[1] Have you always been a foodie, or is that something you grew into?
I have always been a foodie, whether it involved enjoying a fabulous home-cooked meal or dining out somewhere. But, to this day, desserts are my absolute favorite part of any meal! Wherever I am eating, I am more excited about having dessert than the actual meal…lol. I always find myself looking as the dessert section of the menu before the appetizer or main course section! I usually know what I would be having for dessert before I even know what I will be having to drink…hee-hee 😉
[2] How and why did you begin your blog?
I started my blog after taking Wilton’s cake decorating classes. I was absolutely hooked with this new hobby and I needed a place to document everything I was learning. I also wanted to share everything I was learning with others, hoping it would help them out.
Initially, I was just blogging about cake decorating but then I realized I like baking just as much as cake decorating and I can blog about both.
I also figured out that decorating does not have to be limited to cakes. I can decorate cookies and brownies and anything else I want!
After all, desserts are so much sweeter when they are dressed up and “beautified” 😉
[3] What’s your favorite thing to make/cook?
My favorite thing to make is this Crazy Wacky Depression Cake. This recipe has been running in our family for generations. Now, when I make it for my own family, it makes me so happy that I am passing this tradition and recipe along to the next generation. This chocolate cake tastes AMAZING and is very soft and moist and it is made with no eggs, milk or butter. So, I can even make it for my little one’s friends who have dairy allergies…YAY!
[4] What is your favorite thing to eat?
These chocolate date balls, hands down! I have a batch of these made all the time now! These little cuties give me a boost of energy to keep up with my hectic life and my super active 2-year-old. These balls are healthy but don’t taste healthy which is why I love munching on them all the time!
[5] What is your comfort food?
My comfort food seems to change according to my mood. Lately, I have been obsessed with my Rose syrup chocolate bark cake. It’s beautiful and tastes heavenly!
I am also very fond of my gold halva cake. I think it’s fit for royalty and I feel so fancy, eating it…hehe.
[6] Describe your perfect food day?
Touring all the bakeries in Chicago. There are SOOOOO many wonderful bakeries here. I want to visit all of them and sample their cakes, cupcakes and everything else they make! I am sure I would need to hit the gym daily for months after that tour but it would be completely worth it! Haha 😛
[7] What are three other blogs that inspire you?
1) Sprinkle Bakes: Lots of creative recipes and breathtaking photography.
2) The Cake Blog: There are some great cake decorating tutorials here along with some posts about the science of baking.
3) I am baker: Such a fun and witty blog with lots of easy cake decorating tutorials, using buttercream plus some mouth-watering recipes.
[8] Do you have advice for bloggers just starting out?
Blog about whatever you are most passionate about and use all the social media out there to stay in touch with your fans and readers!
Thanks Abeer!
Keep up with Abeer’s tasty tidbits on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest and of course by visiting Cake Whiz.
How about you? What would you like to ask Abeer?
