Weekly Wanderings #43 – Ft. Myers

When I last left you we were headed to Orlando for a Freightliner appointment. That appointment was for a 2-3 hour service beginning at 9 a.m. We left at 4:30! The bright spot of our day was finding an amazing barbecue place for lunch, but other than that it pretty much sucks to be at the mercy of a mechanic.

Leaving at the time we did put us right in the middle of commute traffic as we drove across Orlando heading to Florida’s Space Coast. We barely made it to our RV park. They don’t let you arrive after dark, and force you to stay in a parking lot until the next day. It was a matter of minutes. Driving through rush hour traffic is nerve-wracking in an RV. All in all, not a day to repeat.

Saturday we headed to Kennedy Space Center. Holy space dollars is it expensive! I think Mr. Misadventures and I are out of the loop because we don’t have kids and don’t go to amusement parks, but wow is it pricey!

We enjoyed our visit and tour. Mr. Misadventures is a huge SciFi fan so he’s watched Apollo 13 about a billion times. It was really cool to see the VAB and LC-39 launchpad, the spot where nearly all the he Apollo and Space Shuttle launches took place. When we got back to the RV we watched The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 back to back!

Sunday we drove to Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach. They were a bit disappointing in my book. It started to rain so we headed back for a quiet day of reading and watching the news. On Monday we headed to Ft. Myers where we are staying two weeks. When we arrived we stocked up on supplies and prepped for playing tourist.

Election day we watched the news in the morning and headed to the movies (Inferno) to distract ourselves. Once the evening arrived we were glued to the TV until 1:30 a.m. I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore despite what was happening. The next day we woke in a daze of disbelief and couldn’t find the energy to do anything but stare at the news (and social media) for the entire day as we wondered, along with everyone else, what the hell happened.

After being in the RV way too many hours Tuesday and Wednesday, on Thursday we got out early for a Jeep tune-up and then headed to Sanibel and Captiva Islands. We drove and walked through the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. We were there a little too late for most of the birds so we will go back next week.

We headed to the beach in Captiva and took a nice long walk along the shore.

The beaches on these islands are stunning! White sand, clean and full of shells. I haven’t seen that many shells on a beach in decades. We’re headed back there on Monday to have a beach day. I’ve got a beach tent, chairs, a cooler and six new books on my Kindle so I’m ready!

On Friday we checked out Six Mike Cypress Slough, a wonderful wildlife refuge near where we are staying. We walked the boardwalk and spotted lots of birds. (We went back this today at dawn with camera this time and walked the loop twice. It is so peaceful in the morning.)

Afterwards we drove to Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary to scope out for photography, when we arrived we learned the cost for the walking loop is $14 per person so we decided we didn’t want to pay twice and we’ll be heading there early tomorrow morning to catch the opening and the morning light.

In between all our exploring we caught three movies: Inferno, Jack Reacher and Arrival. It’s been awhile since we’ve had access to so many theaters. We found the most amazing movie theater in Naples with massive leather seats, it is so nice.  I enjoyed each film, but I highly recommend Arrival!

After so many destabilizing weeks, a five-day sprint from Yellowstone, the death of Jessica, three weeks in Red Bay and a week of driving to get to Florida, this is the first week, that feels more normal (except for the whole election thing…).  It was exactly one year ago this week that we closed escrow on our house, picked up the RV and headed out. We still have almost three months to go, and I want to make sure we enjoy every moment!
