Weekly Wanderings #27 – Oregon Coast, Florence

Bandon was really beautiful, the rock formations on the beaches kept Mr. Misadventures entertained for hours. The town has a cool vacation vibe, the weather is absolutely perfect (for the Misadventures family) and the seafood is delectable.

We’ve been eating rock fish and Chinook salmon almost everyday. Dungeness crab just about every other. We missed the whole dungeness season that we normally in enjoyed in San Francisco (Nov-Mar) so we are making up for lost time! There’s only two weeks left of the season so this bounty won’t last.

I’m not a big fan of fried foods. Even my beloved fried chicken is something I rarely eat, but when a local convinced us not to miss the fish and chips at the Bandon Fish Market we had to give it a go.

The line was long which means it’s good or touristy, we were hoping for good. After a long pause (they fry to order) we got our fish and chips and clam chowder and I can tell you it was worth the  wait.

The fish (I had cod you could choose from several kinds)  was incredibly fresh and delicate retaining its juiciness despite a crunchy golden fry. Not greasy at all and a total delight with malt vinegar.

The clam chowder tasted like clams, had large pieces of clams and was the perfect level of creaminess. We had a terrible clam chowder in Gold Beach that was more like potato soup with bacon.  This more than made up for it.

[It’s been awhile since I had any food to write about so bear with me!]

We left Bandon on Tuesday and made our way north to Florence. Another absolutely wonderful spot on the Oregon coast. We’ve been out on the jetty over the dunes to pristine and practically empty beaches. We’ve been dune hiking in the sand dune park behind our RV park (I’m dying to try an ATV on these hills it looks like so much fun).

We’ve spent a lot of time at the tidepools. The are absolutely fantastic! It’s like going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium without any railing to hold you back! Gorgeous green sea anemones, bright purple urchins, a rainbow of starfishes, sea lions at arms length (maintaining the appropriate 50 yard distance).  Every day is different and we have visited them almost daily.

But the biggest thrill of all? Seeing the amazing couple we met in Moab in April.  They are Oregonians and we had hoped to meet-up again, but they surprised us by staying at the same RV park and we have been spending the last few days together. It’s been awesome.  Plus they have a new addition to their family, beyond adorable four month old Finn!

Finn

We have immensely enjoyed being around this rambunctious fellow and his mamas and it has been a nice change of pace from the regular just-the-two-of-us normality of the Misadventures life.

The Oregon coast continues to be one wonderful stop after another.  Next up? Ten days in Newport.

  5. Wow! What wonderful pictures. I feel as if I can reach out and touch the mussels and barnacles, and smell the salty, “seaweedy” air. I bet it is a good idea to wear hiking boots when navigating those tide pools, to avoid cutting up your feet in flip flops 🙂 You certainly have captured the seafood paradise of the Oregon coast. Reading your blog makes me crave cioppino and fish curry (because I love curry).

We too immensely enjoyed spending the week with you in Florence. It was a week we will never forget. You and your fabulous photographer husband (how does he take such amazing pictures?) are incredible, impressive, kind human beings. Thank you for the fun, entertaining, and informative gift of this blog.
