Travel Gear Tuesday (on a Monday) – Gogobot

GogobotIf you will recall from last week, I went to Portland for the weekend and had a great time.  What I didn’t write about (until now) is a tool I used to help me plan my trip.

In the past I have not been a huge fan of travel apps, there are a handful I play with from time to time, but nothing I use consistently.  But then I read an article in one of the many travel magazines I devour every month about a former travel editor at Gourmet magazine who had been to Paris dozens and dozens of trips but discovered at least 20 new things to do, eat or see on a recent trip using a mobile app.

That got me thinking.  If someone who has been to Paris dozens and dozens of times (like I have) can learn new things from an app, I could too.  I am probably missing out on things all the time by not using them!  So while exploring and planning for my weekend to Portland I decided to test out the Gogobot app and website.

I already had my hotel picked, but I wanted to explore where to eat and what to do for the weekend.  Remember the beautiful coffee spot, Public Domain?

Well I discovered it on the Gogobot website as a must-do for a great cup of coffee.  And while I knew I was going to Pine State Biscuit, I was thrilled to confirm that others on the site had tried it and liked it.

After surfing around I went to the Gogobot app and started building my trip itinerary, adding my restaurants and doing additional searches on things to do.

Remember my bridge to one of the many Portland bridges which led to a fall which led to shopping (which led to a scarf!), well that was at the Steel Bridge, a spot I picked out using the app!

All in all, I found the app easy to use and benefited from the great suggestions made by the Gogobot community.  Not only that, but I have a new-found interest and appreciation for travel apps in general!

I know I’m hesistant about travel apps too. But I have learned to use urban spoon for my US travels to find the best local restaurants.

Great info! I travel some, mostly when the kids are going to dance competition, wrestling tournaments and such, but we always have a little down time and sounds like this app would be handy to find places to eat and things to do.

  6. Looks really great. I’m goingto download it.

  7. I’m going to check it out.

  8. Well over the weekend, I took a 12 hour car ride. This looks like it could have come in handy. Too many cups of lousy coffee.
