Saturday Six #74

Why cheese? And cheese with “six” holes?  Well it is the 74th edition of Saturday Six and 74 represents the region of  Haute-Savoie in France, the region which was my next door neighbor while I was living in L’Ain and where Mr. Misadventures and I did a lot skiing.  It is home of Mont Blanc and fondue (it is not just a Swiss thing) and tartiflette, a yummy after-ski treat. Thus…emmenthal cheese with six holes…because that is one of the cheeses used in both of those dishes!

You know when I am not thinking about travel I constantly have food on the brain which is reflected in my selections for the week!

[1] As I mentioned in last week’s Saturday Six #73, David Lebovitz is in the Bay Area as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Chez Panisse. I am really enjoying his posts as he reminisces about working there and attending anniversary events, it is such an iconic place that represents many of the principles that Mr. Misadventures and I believe about food.  Also I had the wonderful pleasure of “meeting” David this week at a book signing in San Francisco, I only wished I could have had a longer conversation with him.  [By the way, I am giving away one of the signed books I got, The Perfect Scoop.]

[2] Carolyn of Food Gal is living all my fried chicken fantasies. Fried chicken is a key ingredient in my last meal and my total comfort food craving. First it was Bake Sale Betty (Saturday Six #47. see #5a)  and now it is her visit to Ad Hoc Addendum that has me green with envy!  I have got to get to Yountville (in Napa Valley) on the double!

[3] I have written about the LibaSF Falafel food truck before.  Gail visits near my office every Thursday and her food is such a delight.  Now she is also part of the weekly Wednesday Off the Grid food truck gathering near Chez Panisse in the Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck in Berkeley as well.  I have been trying to get over to the gathering for a few weeks now and I will get there by the end of the month! This week Sarah of Lettuce Eat Kale did a wonderful write-up/interview about this very tasty food truck.

[4] Food in Paris used to come from practically one source, Les Halles.  The essence of this market has been best captured in Émile Zola’s novel Le Ventre de Paris (The Belly of Paris), it is a must-read classic if you are interested in Paris and food.  The activity of Les Halles was moved out to Rungis (you can see Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations or Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods episodes on Paris to catch peeks of this market which is not open to the public).  Parisien Salon had a great little post on the topic this week.

[5] And speaking of Paris…yes, I know I am constantly speaking of Paris.  But it was reading several books on the topic of French women that really gave me an appreciation of a good wardrobe built on solid basics and classics and that includes lingerie!  The ladies at Haven in Paris  share “Parisian secrets on the art of lingerie shopping” and it is not to be missed!

[6] My life is pretty hectic right now and there are moments when I begin to feel very stressed, that is why posts like Improve Every Moment from Zen Habits are a wonderful reminder that I control this feeling and that I need to take a breathe and slow things down.

  2. You MUST try the Ad Hoc fried chicken. I do think it’s my fave. Super crunchy and wonderfully juicy flesh. It’s what all fried chicken should be like.
