Journy to Lisbon

Journy to Lisbon

I’ve written before about my Portuguese heritage, mainly when it comes to food (as usual). I had the opportunity to visit Portugal with my family in 1989 or 1990 (the memory is slipping) when we spent time in the coastal resort, Cascais. I remember the octopus mainly (of course).

Mr. Misadventures and I have planned several trips to Portugal, only to change to another location, one time Kyoto, the other Italy.  It just wasn’t meant to be.

So when Viking River Cruises invited me to pick any European location to try out their line of river cruises, it took us less than ten minutes to decide, Portugal.  We are leaving Jessica and the RV in my parent’s trusty hands in Phoenix and heading to Portugal at the end of May.

Portugal's River of Gold

The cruise is ten days long and goes from Lisbon to Porto along the Duoro River. I am super excited, plus there are food excursions!  Made for me I tell ya!

In addition, we’ll also be arriving in Lisbon a day and half before the cruise and staying in Lisbon two and a half days after, driving ourselves from Porto to Lisbon.  That’s not a lot of time to take advantage of this captivating capitol.

That’s where Journy comes in.

Journy Website

A curated concierge travel service for travelers with recommendations coming from a tantalizing group of tastemakers, the fabulous Journyists – chefs, sommeliers, editors, and travel experts.

Journy Experts JournyistsThe folks at Journy reached out to me to see how we might partner together and I said, “plan me an itinerary.”  I gave them one of my four precious days in Lisbon and let them go for it.

I went through the on-boarding experience in less than five minutes providing my likes and interests as well as budget and style.  My concierge came back and asked a few clarifying questions and off she went to work on my itinerary.  Journy creates custom itineraries with the local restaurants, bars, accommodations, attractions and activities (everything but the flight). The tailored plan costs $15/day.

I got my customized itinerary (you can see it here) and the choices the concierge selected for me are spot on.  Places that I cannot wait to try.  I am really looking forward to my meals! Lucky me, even though this plan is for one day, I have multiple options and I can try them all as I am actually staying four days.

The Journy concierges can handle reservations and bookings for your hotel and restaurants, I’m choosing to do it on my own, but I love that they have this option.

You can have your tailored travel plan created either chronologically (day-by-day) or in a flexible itinerary format with recommendations by activity type (that’s what I did).

$15/day which is very reasonable for handcrafted travel services, but I’ve got a DISCOUNT code for you! Use MISADVENTURES25 and you will get 25% off your entire trip itinerary. They can plan a trip for the US and beyond.

I am looking forward to my Viking River Cruise and now I know that my extra days in Lisbon are going to be filled with dining and activities designed to fit my travel-style and interests thanks to Journy.  I will be reporting back after my trip to Lisbon to let you know how everything went!

How about you? Have you tried a curated/custom travel service before?  Would you consider creating your own Journy?

Disclosure: Journy waived my $15 fee for the one day of planning they did for me. I just think the service is really cool, my opinion, and I will definitely be putting it to the test on my trip.

  6. Aw a river cruise in Portugal, what a dream! Plus, Journy sounds like a very handy thing for those who don’t have enough time to look into things themselves 🙂

  7. I would love to travel to Lisbon someday!

  8. Oh my gosh! This is the coolest service ever! I would MUCH rather place my itinerary for a day or two in the hands of experts who know the area- especially when I am visiting an area or city for the first time and I happen to be clueless about where to eat, where to do, etc, lol. I would glad pay someone $15 a day to save me the research, and the reading of endless Tripadvisor reviews, etc, etc.

Have fun on your cruise! I am so glad that a trip to Portugal is finally coming together for you all. Enjoy, and I can’t wait to hear about how your Journy itinerary turns out! 🙂

  12. That Viking River cruise sounds superb! Portugal has been high on my list for some time. And Journy might be a perfect solution for someone like me — I love to travel but hate to plan! What a time-saver. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

  13. I loved Portugal when I went so many moons ago. I stayed in not only LIsbon but the Algarve and I am sure it is completely different now 30 years later. Would love to go back and you have me longing to go again with this post!!

  14. Ahhh I visited Spain back in 2001 but never made it to Portugal. I would absolutely love to get there one day! I love Portuguese food!

  15. Ok, well first of all… Portugal is on my list of places to go. I’ve sailed with Viking in France, so perhaps I need to try out their Portugal trip! The Journy service seems like it would be really cool. The only thing I’d be worried about is if they are working with certain places (getting kickbacks) for recommending them. I always want to find the most hole-in-the-wall places possible!! Any knowledge on how they choose their recs?

@Lori, they rely on local experts, frequent travelers and other tastemakers. I feel the same way as you that is why I am interested to see how their recommendations turn out – on paper they look great but the proof will be in the pudding!
