All my attempts to capture one of the best San Francisco food truck items (the other two being baos from The Chairman and fried chicken from Arki) have been complete failures so I am showcasing this gorgeous image of Roli Roti’s famous porchetta sandwich from I Left My Cart in SF instead. I prefer to use my own photos for Friday Food Foto, but I felt it was important to share this particular item today.
Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the Ferry Building in San Francisco and I wanted to take a moment to say “Happy Birthday” to this iconic spot in the city. One of the best parts of having a new job in the Financial District is that I am a half-block from here which means I am a half-block from having this amazing sandwich every Thursday! Roli Roti started out serving their porchetta sandwiches and rotisserie chicken at the Ferry Building’s farmer’s market on Saturdays and as the food truck craze in San Francisco exploded they took their cart on the streets of the city as well.
The crew serving the delectable goodies which also include rosemary potatoes work extremely hard under hot conditions but they always do it with speed and a smile. As I was looking around for a photo of the sandwich, I found this great shot of one of the truck team’s tattoos (I have actually admired it in person) by the super-talented San Francisco photographer Donald Chan.
The Ferry Building is a special spot in the heart of San Franciscans, a project completed by the beloved ex-mayor Willie Brown. Not only is it beautiful, gorgeously re-using an area of the city that was beginning to look a little shabby, but it is a foodie’s mecca! Besides the farmer’s market on Saturday and Wednesday there are plenty of food shops and restaurants inside all at the feet of the Bay Bridge along the Embarcadero. It is a must do for any visit to the city.
