Traveler Tuesday – Stew Ross

Traveler-Tuesday-on-Misadventures-with-AndiI love connecting with other travelers via the Traveler Tuesday series and this week it is with new contact Stew Ross who has a blog of the same name. He will also be back on Thursday with a guest post.

[1] When and how did you become a traveler?

Our family moved to Holland when I was 9 years old (1964). We lived in Europe for 4 years during which time I traveled throughout Europe with my mother and siblings. This experience developed into a life-long passion for traveling.

I remember that London was always my favorite city back then. I can remember Carnaby Street when the hippie movement was at its zenith. For me, London was the start of my fascination with history, especially British history. However, today my favorite place to sit and watch people is in the Luxembourg Gardens on a Sunday afternoon.

My wife travels all over the world in her position as a food scientist. On occasion we will meet in a country after her work ends. I tend to be very Eurocentric (go figure having grown up in Europe). So I usually will consider tagging along when her travels take place in Germany, France, or other parts of Europe.

[2] What is travel to you in 10 words or less?

Travel is fun, a learning experience, and memories to share.

[3] What is your favorite mode of transportation and why?

I like to travel by car. It’s the one mode of transportation that I have personal control over. That is as long as I’m driving on the right hand side of the street. When driving in England, my sense of perception gets all messed up. Then to really mess things up, they have those bloody curbs on every street.

I must have gone airborne at least four times making those wide left turns at 100 kilometers per hour. After three days, the left front tire on our rental car looked like it had the bubonic plague—big old puss marks on the sidewall. The tire finally blew about 10 miles outside Edinburgh, Scotland.

Oh, I neglected to tell you that the best way to travel is by car when someone else is driving—especially in England.

[4] What do you typically do while traveling by plane?

Nothing. I can’t sleep or read on an airplane. So I sit and think. Oh, I just learned how to download music and take it with me. I have some awesome BOSE headphones. Pink Floyd and I travel a lot together now.

[5] What is one blogging tip or lesson that you have learned along the way that you can share with my readers?

Write about something that is interesting to other people. Create a catchy title, hook your audience with the first several sentences, and then write as though you were speaking with someone across the table.

The best blogging tip I can give someone who doesn’t blog is: BLOG! If you don’t, you’re missing opportunities.

[6] Where to next?

The past few years have seen us go to Paris for the purpose of researching my books. Since I still have several more books on Paris left in the pipeline, I suppose we will be back there a couple of more times. Our next spot after that will be London. One of the books in the pipeline is on the old city of Londinium and I can see several research trips in the future.

Another place I want to visit is Hamburg, Germany. I lived in Frankfurt for a year and we saw much of southern Germany but not much of the north. Besides, there is a fantastic model railroad located in Hamburg. I’ve seen it on television as well as their web site. It has to be the most amazing railroad setup I’ve ever seen.
