Happy 2014 everyone! I have big expectations for this year. Probably not fair to the Universe, but I am saying it any way. I am ready to turn the page on 2013. I’ve had better years. Lots better. I am not big on traditions, I create my own, but there is something about turning the page on the calendar that gives me hope.
Last year when I shared my 2013 plans, I selected the word REFINE to represent what I wanted: to channel my energy and efforts into for the year. I said I wanted to be intentional about everything I did and to make sure that I am optimizing all my efforts. That I needed to do everything I am doing that much better so that I could gain efficiencies and maximize the energy I expended.
I am stubborn.
And this time I mean it! There have been so many great posts recently about approaching the new year. I particularly like the post written by Stacey Roberts on Problogger. The post is about blogging (which I need a giant kick in the butt on) but I think many of the words of advice can apply to every aspect of my life, for me it is definitely a mixture.
Do a design refresh
I am a dozen pounds over-weight. I like to eat. I hate to exercise. Something has to give! The holidays have killed me this year. I used being unhappy about certain things in my life as an excuse to indulge. I didn’t invent this, it happens to people all the time. But it can’t go on any longer. Being petite, ten plus pounds has adverse affects on my health as well as my wardrobe! For the first time ever I will be doing a cleanse. Next week myself and a few others from my office will be doing a 3-day juice cleanse (from The Juice Shop – love those guys!). I need to detox my body and my mind and this is the first step.
As for the blog, I did a refresh last year, there are a few tweaks I want to make, but I am pretty happy with the design. I will be focusing on content improvements.
Narrow your focus
My tree continues to guide me, but I need to have a tighter focus and work on refinement. I have so many ideas but so little time, something I am going to change.
Take off the chains
For many years I was a daily blogger, but at some point in time, it was more about filling a slot in my editorial calendar rather than posting because I was dying to share something. Blogging is my creative outlet, but you can’t force passion and when you mix life in sometimes you have to give up a piece of the puzzle so that you don’t sacrifice quality. I believe quality has been sacrificed for a good portion of this past year. That ends now.
I am also going to throw a bit of virtual chains off as well and maybe begin to share a bit more about my life. It is very difficult when you work in social media, particularly when you work for a brand. You are representing the brand 24×7 and must be careful what you do and say. There is a responsibility that goes along with this professional.
For five years while working at Dolby I could not really share opinions about movies (something I am extremely passionate about) because movie studios are big clients of Dolby. Point being, anyone watching the Justine Sacco events can see the impact of your personal opinion on your work when you express them publicly. And while I would never do anything like that, I could share a little more of myself here without impacting my professional life, there is a balance. I so enjoy when other bloggers share about their life, and I want to do more.
I have ideas for projects that could bring in a little bit of income, but I have been focusing on helping Mr. Misadventures get his website up. If you have been around here for awhile, you’ll know he is a fantastic photographer and I look forward to pointing you over to his site to see more when it launches.
Change your routine AND Change how and where you write
Mr. Misadventures and I are experimenting with this and I think I have a plan to change how I manage my day. The intent is to give me more time to write for the blog and other projects that I have on my plate and I am super excited to see if it will work. There are bigger adjustments that I intend to make this year, but I am not going to bite off more than I can chew and am going to take baby steps on this.
Read new, not more
I have been working on this, weeding out blogs I am not so interested in that just sit in my RSS. Making sure I read the blogs I love more frequently as well as seeking out new blogs that will continue to inspire me.
Who’s your muse?
I am inspired by three bloggers at the moment. Three super smart women who make me want to be a better blogger and a better person. Jennifer James of JenX67. Lindsey Tramuta of Lost in Cheeseland. And Katie Gard of Domestiphobia.
Declare victory of failure
I failed last year. I will not fail again, I am determined! I know it is silly, but I feel like I need a talisman to remind me of my goals for this year. I found a really great necklace on Etsy from a designer named rainnua…well actually I found about 20 necklaces from her I wanted, but I narrowed down to this one, that I am going to customize with the word refine:
This year is also the Year of the Horse (Jan 31) and the spirit of the horse is said to represent unremitting efforts to improve oneself. I think that fits in perfectly with what my intentions are for 2014.
How about you? What would your theme word be?
