(Not quite) Wordless Wednesday #155: Historical Monday

Sorry for the late post, but I thought I had put my photos in my Dropbox so I could access them remotely, but that didn’t happen!  If you follow me on Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare or Instagram you will have likely seen what I was up to on Monday in Los Angeles.

The company I work for, Dolby Laboratories, took over the theater that is home to the Academy Awards and Cirque de Soleil show Iris.  It is no longer called the Kodak Theatre.  As of the unveiling on Monday, June 11th and for the next twenty years, it is now the Dolby Theatre.

There were several in-theatre events along with an all day street party that included dancing, a DJ school, silent disco, commemorative photos and more.  I was there to cover the event for my company’s social media channels and despite a very long day, I had a great time!

Here is a small selection of photos:

The street party took place at the Hollywood and Highland center where the theatre is housed. And for the unveiling ceremony we shut down several lanes of Hollywood Blvd and set up a stage for a Cirque de Soleil performance.

When it was time for the unveiling, there were speeches from the Hollywood councilman, the President of the Academy Awards and the Dolby CEO.  Then a portion of the Iris cast performed and brought us to the unveiling of the new Dolby Theatre sign.

The curtain drop was beautiful but happened so fast!

As a huge fan of cinema it was truly magical to be a part of the moment in history and I will always remember this day.

I took a video with my iPhone of the Cirque performance and the curtain drop but the professional videographer that my company uses (who is an amazingly talented guy) recorded the entire event and did far better than I ever could (although I will edit my video and get it up on YouTube).

I am embedding the video here.  If you want to skip the speeches and go straight to the Cirque performance than start at the 8:30 mark on the timer.

I am heading back to LA on Sunday for the world premiere of Brave for Disney Pixar which will be the grand opening of the Dolby Theatre. It is my first red (or in this case green) carpet event and it should be fun!
