#Reverb10 Day 2 Make-up – Writing

Today’s prompt for #Reverb10 is:

Writing. What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?

This topic was provided by Leo Babauta of Zen Habits fame.

As someone who constantly carries around a moleskine, a spiral notebook and an iPhone with a voice recorder I am well armed with tools that help me with my daily writing.

But at the same time that pesky iPhone has made it easy to facilitate a habit that I am not too particularly proud of and which does not contribute to my writing (well minimally at least).  That is TV shows.

I do not watch TV at home.  I may join my husband in watching thirty minutes of French news a couple of times of week, but that’s it.

Until the iPhone.

Because I have a daily commute on BART to and from work nearly every day it has become my habit to download TV series like The Office, Modern Family, Mad Men, etc and watch them for the 30 minutes on the train.  Time I used to use to brainstorm and write.

These shows do give me ideas from to time, but probably not enough to justify the general brain rot that occurs with television!  However it does make my commute more enjoyable, so could I eliminate it? Yes.  Will I? Probably not.  But I think I will cut back as a compromise!

How about you?

Comments

  1. Maybe you could do where you watch tv in the morning and write in the afternoon? Or vice versa? Good luck!

  2. I think there’s value in having a few little guilty pleasures – it’s a matter of moderation.
