I feel very fortunate to have grown up an Army brat and to have moved all over the country and the world. My parents did an amazing job of taking my sister and I on all kinds of trips to museums, parks, historical sites, expositions and sports venues. We were exposed to many, many experiences of which I have many fond memories of.
I can see now that this took a lot of coordination. Even though I don’t have kids myself I still have an appreciation of the amount of effort it takes to get a family anywhere!
Seems like for most things these days there are a ton more resources, particularly online. And besides websites, there are bloggers dedicated to exploring and sharing family travel experiences in an effort to help fellow parents out. I know two very such dedicated bloggers.
One is my Frenchie friend Lydie Thomas who has a blog Travel is More Fun with Kids. She specializes in San Francisco and Paris as well as other locations around the world, such as Rome. She calls herself a travel whisperer and has dedicated herself to finding fun and educational trips to do with your children and to share with you.
The other exceptional site comes from my Iowa gal pal Jody. She is the blogger extraordinaire at Family Rambling (formerly Have Kids Will Travel). Jody and family travel all over and provide first-hand experiences of tips and tricks for keeping organized, staying sane and having fun. She has been numerous places in the U.S. and Ireland, which she loves as much as I love France. If you are interested in winning trips, and frankly, who isn’t, she always lists good travel contest going on. Subscribe to her blog and you will always be in the know!
Jody also hosts a small blogging conference in Iowa in November called iBlog, so make note if you are within travel distance from there, it is definitely something you don’t want to miss. I’ve got it on my calendar!
Jody has come out with a really cute travel journal to be used by kids or parents (I think it is adorable for kids). It would have been really cool to have one of these while I was traveling around with my family.
She is selling them for $15.00 on her site and I plan to pick up a few for my nieces. I bought one to check out and have as a giveaway. Jody even sent me some chocolates to go with it, an extra bonus for you!
To enter, just leave a comment about your favorite family vacation growing up, or one that you have taken with your own kids. You have until Thursday, March 4th midnight PST to leave your comment and I will use Random.org to select a winner.
Good luck!

My favorite as a kid was my first overseas trip to Hong Kong and Singapore – everything was so exotic – most of all the breakfast buffets to our kid eyes!
I couldn’t agree more with the title of this blog!!! I can’t imagine any activity being more bonding!
As a child every summer we went camping at a lake in northern california, the same spot where my mother camped every year, my grandmother did every year and my great grandmother did every year. Now every summer, I take my two children there so they can grow up with the same memories I did.
It has changed a bit. When I was a child, we slept in a tent and were covered in red dirt the entire week … it was dirt camping. Now my parents have a deluxe trailer on a grass lot that leads down to a sandy beach and sometimes me and the kids will stay in a condo nearby … I guess you can’t really call that camping anymore if you sleep in a condo? : )
@Kristi – oh! what lake? My parents and grandparents did the same!
Hi Andi,
Thanks for the mention.
Looks like my two little travelers are going to explore the Netherlands this summer.
Should be interesting.
A bientot
