Seeing the green fairy on Virgin America

I have always enjoyed Virgin America, from the first time I saw their safety video. To my last flight with them to Los Angeles. I have flown with them to Seattle, Vegas and LA and think they are fabulous. But with the latest news…it is over the top L-O-V-E.

Virgin America is now serving Absinthe on their flights! Although the spirit is actually Swiss, it was made famous Parisian artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec. It is a distilled spirit that had a hallucinogenic effect. It was banned in 1915 until the late 1990′s when it was allowed back into the European Union. Although it is in a much milder proof than when originally made famous, it still today has its earlier reputation of a psychedelic diversion.

There are now absinthe bars in Paris that you can visit and try out the lovely liquor, but it seems you won’t need to travel quite that far to get what Le Tourment Vert is calling the “mile high cocktail,” which is now being served on Virgin America.

I am going to be flying on Virgin Airways in a couple of weeks, my only hope is that they serve it there as well!

P.S. for a fun movie, rent Moulin Rouge on DVD and see Kylie Minogue as the green fairy and John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec!

It’s funny that you write a post about absinthe… I’ve had an unwritten absinthe post in my mind for over a year now.

Besides the fact that the liquor got such a bad rap stemming from reasons that have no scientific basis (much like the fears about marijuana that come from the 1920s), I have had this fascination with absinthe even though I’ve never had any.

When I was in Venice, that was one of my goals: to order absinthe in a bar, since it’s legal there and wasn’t here at the time. I never got the chance (even though I have some absinthe flavored candies) and when I got back to the US, the drink soon became legal.

And the funny thing is now I don’t care to try it anymore. Perhaps the allure has rubbed off for me, now that it’s not contraband?

You’ll have to let us know if it makes airline travel more palatable. ;-)

Sorry for the long comment, but this was fun!

thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

  3. The idea of possibly hallucinating during air travel sounds both great and terrifying at the same time. :) I will be curious to hear about it!

I know my beloved Pastis which is de rigueur in the South of France is forbitten in the States, is it related to absinthe?

  5. Madeliene – I did not know Pastis was also forbidden, I guess I had not paid attention since we have still quite a few bottles in our cabinet, love it in the summer time!
